음악 취향에 대한 개인적 차이

  영국 Heriot-Watt Univ.의 Adrian C. North 교수가 미국 심리학회지에 투고한 논문 "음악 취향에 대한 개인적 차이"이 흥미롭다. 36,518명의 참가자를 대사으로 설문조사를 실시하여 개인적 성향과 음악적 취향에 대한 상관관계를 연구하였다. 설문조사는 5가지 대표적인 성향을 파악하는 질문과 104가지 음악 스타일에 대한 선호도를 묻는 질문으로 만들어졌다. 나이, 성별, 소득수준에 비해 상대적으로 개인 성향은 상관관계가 적지만 분명한 연관성을 보인다고 한다.

  대체로 high self-esteem, creative가 많은 것 같다. 장르를 명확하게 인지하고 음악을 듣는 사람들이 되어서일지 설문조사에 응한 자발적인 사람들이어서인지 모르겠지만 신기한 현상이다. Indie나 rock, heavy metal을 선호하는 사람들이 low self-esteem인 것은 설명하기 쉽지 않지만 왠지 수긍이 되는 면이 있다.

 

  나는 워낙 잡식성이다 보니 음악을 가리지 않지만 듣는 빈도로 보았을 때 전반적으로 high self-esteem, creative, outgoing, gentle, at ease, not hardworking 성향을 보이는 것 같다. 사람이 어떻게 특정 유형으로 분류가 되겠느냐 마는 그래도 이런 특성이 많이 발현되는 것이겠지.
